“How is this pre-writing?” she asked.

I answered as I watched her play with the materials, explaining that writing is a process, a series of choices that involve research, gathering, imagination, cut and paste, adding and subtracting, thinking, and committing to ideas, both concrete and figurative.

As we talked I noticed her posture relax, her resistance simmer, as she grazed over the print media images and text. She cut and tore along the lines and margins, selecting certain images over others, making specific choices as she organized and arranged the images and text into formal thoughts and narratives, moving them around the blank space, forming her ideas—writing.
