‘Because words come and pull me forward’

Writing, a process of peeling back and putting down is an arduous one, covered in curiosity, anticipation, as much as fear and doubt, questioning the words coming out, the order of things, the sheer volume of facts, imagination, creativity. And then there is some loneliness, frustration, standing still at a cross-road, a line break, a paragraph trying to take a step, a scribble, a letter tap towards something, anything on the page that looks, sounds like what the writer imagined, intended, conjured up from broken bits and pieces, curious trails, memories of the mind.

Here is an excerpted quote from Rebecca Walker, from the anthology, Shaking the Tree, edited by Meri Nana-Ama Danquah. Walker shares an honest perspective on the process of writing:

Since the sheer pleasure thing isn’t happening, for my own sanity I have had to privilege other benefits of writing. More often than not, I write to work through something that haunts me, something that has affected me deeply and will not turn me loose. I reach and reach for what feels like an ever-present but ever-receding thread, knowing that if I can just get ahold of it and discover its source, I will be forever changed.

Perhaps this is why I write: because words come and pull me forward, because I feel safe grabbing the rope.

This quote reminds me of the quote from Kevin Young, this metaphor of a ghost stirring, of a haunting, this uncovering of something, of ourselves, of the things that scare us, stick to our bones and won’t let go.

…And still we rise each day and follow where the words take us. Ms D you have a knack for finding the most appropriate quotes for writers to ponder. Thanks…again!
