“When the sun has set, no candle can replace it.” -George R. R. Martin

Somewhere in the desert
the spines of trees bend
in honor of the darkening sky.
Those wiry sticks bloom
as bare bodies
under dusk and silver.
The orange is boiling above,
a soft skin rippling
between the open
streams of branches
falling into each other,
as veins, crooked and curling.
