“Do flowers talk or sing?”

Day lilies, short-lived
like some love stories,
scattered stems
in the backyard, their narrow
throats, forgiving green calyx
bursting sepals
under quiet sunlight
with blooming tongues
stained yellow orange.

Inspired by my three year old who recently asked, “Mommy, do flowers talk or sing?” Over the past few weeks we’ve been noticing the flowers, the trees, the green growing in our backyard, on our commute, along the tangled streets in our neighborhood.

I agree. Children are full of fearless wonderings.
