And you too can make grilled cheese

As the primary person who cooks in our house (but you better believe I’m teaching those boys), I don’t mind preparing the meals and checking in with everyone to get together the weekly menus. I’m still working on my husband and his kitchen duty, but he’s definitely getting better in that area (ie. I don’t have to ask him to do the dishes most days).

But when a simple sandwich posed an obstacle to my husband in helping with packing the lunches, I really had to put a halt to that and strategize. There’s no way I can drop what I’m doing getting ready for work just to make a grilled cheese sandwich. I thought, “Honey, you can do this.” So while getting ready for work, I called out some basic instructions on how to make grilled cheese: get a little olive oil cooking spray, bread, cheese, skillet, cook it on a low heat and just keep turning so it doesn’t burn—easy. Well when I came down to the kitchen to check on his progress, he had it going in a huge skillet (the kind I would make dinner in), but that’s o.k.; he did it his way and it turned out just fine.

And that’s the point—as a mom and wife, if I did everything around the house jut because I thought I could do it better I’d be doing everything (insert laughter and smile)! So I’ve learned to let go. Let my husband do things his way from changing diapers to packing lunches to getting the boys ready for bed, I can’t do everything and I just have to let go. As busy moms, we have to learn to let go of some of the responsibility and either ask for help or let our husbands and partners help. They can and should help. But we have to let them, and admittedly, that can be hard when I know I can just do it easy, quickly, and without all the instruction. But I’ve learned it frees up everyone’s time when I just allow him to go for what he knows without all my interjections, side commentary and instruction. I have to work at it; it’s not easy!

So as it turned out, Alfonso made a great grilled cheese sandwich that day. Now all I have to do is teach him how to cook some more elaborate meals, maybe even dinner. I’ll get to that one of these days—but definitely not today.

      Thanks Joey!

That’s great that you do most of the cooking. Wow, if I could only get Alfonso to do half of the cooking we’d be getting somewhere. :) I think if you do most of the cooking it only seems fair for the other half to do the dishes, don’t you think? I’m all for a little give and take. I always say when couples help each other out, there is more time for each other!
